The Experiment: A Unique Residential Design by Yi Ling Syu

Transforming Living Spaces through Innovative Spatial Arrangements and Materials

The Experiment is a residential design project by Yi Ling Syu that aims to create a living space that centers around the kitchen, bringing families closer together. By utilizing natural and eco-friendly elements and multi-layered elevation materials, this design sets itself apart from ordinary interiors.

Unlike traditional designs that rely on walls to divide spaces, The Experiment takes a different approach. Hidden divisions and hallways surround the open-end kitchen, creating a seamless flow throughout the public area. The kitchen island, equipped with an IH stove, allows users to face the window scenery and living room while cooking, promoting interaction and connection within the family.

The transparent and accessible design of The Experiment has revolutionized the way families interact in their living spaces. By removing partitions and walls between the living room and the master bedroom, the space is divided using cabinets, creating one living room and two bedrooms. This innovative approach not only maximizes the use of space but also enhances the overall functionality of the residence.

The realization of The Experiment involved the use of various cutting-edge technologies and materials. Machine-cut island-themed wooden floorings, concrete paints, LED lights, glass plates, baked glass, and hotfix laminate hard plastic sheets were meticulously selected and incorporated into the design to achieve the desired aesthetic and functionality.

With a focus on convenience and ease of maintenance, The Experiment incorporates several features that enhance the user experience. LED lights, which do not accumulate dust easily, serve as the main lighting of the residence. The walls are painted in grey, allowing for easier repainting in the future. Additionally, materials such as baked glass and hotfix laminate hard plastic sheets are used to ensure easy cleaning and maintenance.

The Experiment is a testament to the designer's meticulous research and attention to detail. The use of anti-dizzy glass for the television wall and the incorporation of grey-white materials add depth and layers to the elevations. The machine-cut island-themed wooden floorings create a harmonious blend of artificial and natural elements, allowing residents to live in harmony with nature.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was addressing cooking smells, as the IH stove is placed on the kitchen island instead of against the wall. To overcome this, three elevating glasses are hidden within the kitchen ventilator, allowing users to cover the stove when needed. This innovative solution not only eliminates cooking smells but also adds an element of interaction and playfulness to the space.

The elevations of The Experiment are designed in a combination of grey and white colors, creating a solid contrast between the rough and rustic concrete walls and the smooth and bright television wall. This contrast adds depth and layers to the overall design, while the plain colors create a sense of simplicity and neatness in the limited space. The stone grains of the furniture on the kitchen island add a touch of vibrancy and dynamism to the design.

The Experiment, completed in June 2020 in New Taipei City, Taiwan, has garnered recognition for its unique and innovative approach to residential design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is a testament to the design's practicality, innovation, and ability to meet professional and industrial requirements.

With The Experiment, Yi Ling Syu has successfully created a residential design that challenges traditional norms and offers a fresh perspective on living spaces. By prioritizing functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability, this design sets a new standard for modern living.
